"I have a pretty good description of the criminals, so tell me, Mrs. Main, can you look at these drawings and see if these are the men who were here earlier?"
"Why yes, Officer Ward. The drawings look exactly like the men who were here."
"These men are hardened criminals. Why they are after the monkey is a mystery. We have to get the monkey now, Chuck, and take him to the animal shelter for safety. Then, when Mr. Barton is our of the hospital, we can take the monkey home to him."
"Let's go, Officer Ward. They monkey's right out back."
Officer Ward's cell phone rang and he answered on the first ring. "That call was from Mr. Barton's doctor. He said he is awake and is worried about his pet monkey, Lucky. I told him that we know where Lucky is and we'll be taking him to the animal shelter until Mr. Barton is well enough to go home."
"That is good news, Officer Ward. I wonder why those men want the monkey?"
"I have no idea. But let's hurry out there now."
"Hey, where's the monkey? The monkey's gone! He was sitting right here, playing with his ball. And look! His ball is still here under the blanket, but no monkey!"
"Okay, Chuck. Go back to your house and stay there. Obciously those ciminals have found your hiding place and taken the monkey. I'm going to radio in and then start going up and down the street. Phone your friend, Charlie, just to make sure she doesn't have the monkey, please."
After talking to Charlie and finding she doesn't have Lucky, Officer Ward told Chuck to be brave: "You did the best you could. I will come by a little later and let you know how the investigation is going."
To be continued.
