"Hay Mykk! Wasn't that just the greatest party you've ever been to? Did you see all those magic tricks? Did you learn to do a trick?"
"I did learn one trick, but I can't seem to make it work. I guess you have to be a member of this community to know the secrets."
"Don't worry. We'll practice when we get home. Hey, look over there,
there's those lights I was telling you about! Quick Mykk, let's get closer to the edge of the forest and see what's going on."
"I don't think we should venture away from the encampment. Did you see the Regulators had the Ghazer's set for stun? That means they are expecting trouble."
"Oh the Regulators are always expecting the worst. Let's go!"
"Let's get someone to go with us. We don't know what's out there. We might fall down a cavern, or something."
"Oh, come on, Mykk. You have no adventurous spirit. Aren't you even curious about those lights?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"That's better, let's just slip down here and .... ooooh nooo..."
"Well, well. Look what we have here. Two small specimens of humans falling right at our feet! Now, we have two more workers for Ranko."
"Leave us alone! We fell down that hill, but we didn't mean to bother you. We'll just go back up and get the Regulators to help you."
"You think we are fools? We know of the Regulators and their magic weapons. We'll venture no further than this cave entrance. Ge up and walk swiftly, now!"
"Now what have you gotten us into, Alex? I told you we should stay in the encampment, but no, you have to go and look at those strange lights. And they were only lights that came from simple lanterns hanging on those horses' necks."
"Well, how was I to know what they were? You have to admit, they did look strange."
"Quiet you two. No speaking to each other. You will speak only when spoken to and will not, we repeat, will not, stray from this path. There are dangerous animals lurking in this cave, even more dangerous than this whip!"
The whip cracked - then two whips cracked - then three. What a noise! It was probably the most frightening thing the boys had ever encountered."
To be continued.
